Are All Electric Vans This Bad?

3.5t EV van already exists and are in use by DPD.

The purposefully have smaller battery backs to give range of about 60 miles to increase efficiency. Otherwise you are carrying around extra battery weight for range that you don't use.

It's just a mindframe change from filling up weekly to overnight. But it has massively attractive qualities for fleets on many fronts.

2nd hand van for people that drive 100s of sporadic miles are not the market.

Try using an electric 3.5ton van, fully loaded. No chance, the technology is not there yet for commercial vehicles.

Teslas semi is already been out and about and has several thousand orders.

Physical infrastructure is in place, including a charger that does 1 megawatt... This will mean 400 miles range on a fully loaded semi in 30 minutes.

From what I've seen online the port is 4 stacked supercharger ports next to each other - and this keeps the cable size similar. That gets you to 500 kW so I then think they would run it at double voltage (900v) and that will bring you to above the 1 megawatt.

I think the super chargers are max rated to 525A - but see about 250A in use.

EU harmonisation might not cut it for them!

So what if want to do 60 miles? Stranded on the motorway, call out the AA to give you a charge??

Pretty much, at least it won't take long. Could of bought a less cost optimised longer range version.

Got to be good for users like royal mail. I think they use fiat doblos for local parcel deliveries and apparently they're having to sit there revving the things to get the dpf light off. Having said that, if they're anything like my old 1.3 diesel Punto they'll still drive reasonably well round town in limp mode.

The only way I can think of electric vehicles for everyone being practical would be if all the manufacturers co-operated & came up with a universal battery that you could drive into a petrol station slide out your battery & slide in another one. Fraught with all sorts of difficulties I know, but the only way they could replace all internal combustion engines with all electric ones.

I used to think that was the future, but someone has posted on this thread about super fast chargers taking minutes to recharge - I think the future will be some kind of docking bay where you just drive at the plug at the Electric Station then go for a coffee.

My worry is that cars will become like mobile phones, outdated and worthless after a few years. I suppose a lot depends on whether tech companies or car companies win the race.

It needs a bit more than that, it needs massive electrical infrastructure too and major upgrades to the generation capacity.

Aren't some of Amazon's vans all electric now? They must be putting some serious mileages in, as couriers? Or is it just marketing and the only Amazon courier vans are doing small very local daily distances?
