Guys

I have water drops dropping out of this pipe. Any ideas what’s wrong and how I fix it.

Many thanks

Cant see clearly in the photo but it looks like a drain valve which have a small fibre washer inside. Has the valve been opened and closed recently?

That is a drain cock for draining the system. Effectively a tap without a handle. It has a washer and like tap washers it may leak.

At the bottom there is square shaft which may need tightening ( like a leaky tap may to be turned OFF a bit more firmly )

I think it’s precisely that. Drain cock valve. Not not touched it for 5 years.

Superstar Bernard I’ll give that a try now. Let’s hope it stops dripping

Worked a treat. I’ll keep an eye on it in case I ever ever need to change the washer. You’ve really made my year. It’s been so tough. Thank you.

Do it very gently so as not to damage the washer.

What made it come lose in the first place.

Thermal cycling and the resultant expansion and contraction of the cavity in which the washer is located. Extremely small amount but over the years the washer shrinks.

Super thanks Bernard. If I ever needed to replace the washer is it easy to do or do I need a plumber

If you decide on DIY then first make sure you have the correct size of new washer

Firmly connect a hose pipe onto the nozzle, run the hose down hill to a drain. Open the tap and the water will drain away.

Change washer and refill the system

Great advice. By refilling the system is this the same as when the boiler pressure goes down and you use the filling values to put the pressure up to 1.5bar. I’ve learn to much today. ️

I cannot tell if the drain valve is on the heating system ( radiators ) or the hot water system so cannot advise.
