When draining a vented heating system. Is it best to isolate the header tank on the cold feed. Isolate the outlet of the tank on the gate valve. Though I imagine most won't have a valve on the outlet as its a small tank. Or tie the ball valve up. Guess it doesn't really matter just wondered what most do.

isolate the cold feed, empty the water from the F&E tank , clean out all the crap in the tank, then open the drain point, if you dont clean out the tank you will draw all the crap in there into your system
So it's taking buckets up to get the water out of the tank?
Or a hose long enough to reach a suitable receptacle and siphon it, then just leaves dregs of water. Depending on how much, if any dirt/debris is in the tank, you could just drain via a drain off on radiator and then clean the tank with some rags.

shouldnt be much water in it , I use a wet vac, but if you dont have one just use a mug or something and bail the water into a bucket or basin or something, or you could dyphon it out as has already been suggested, you just dont want all the crud going into and blocking your system

Apart from what others have said, it also depends on why you need to drain it.
