To answer your original question..... of course they did. We've pretty much had 2 & 3 way switching since the day after we invented 'lectric
Some of the switching regimes of old were very clever... over-ride switches using the other contact of a 2 way switch to 'force' a lamp ON and using a switch across the 'strappers' of a two way switch circuit to prevent the lamp being turned OFF to name a couple.

I'mnot sure what you mean by "of old"
when we were in our first house (1978-87) my wife became nervous when she heard that when a neighbour had returned home late at night, to an allegedly empty house in total darkness (something my wife often did, since she did shift work and I was often at work during evenings/nights) to be confronted by an intruder who had been hiding/waiting in some corner of the darkened house.
To give her some reassurance, I therefore changed all the one-way light switches to two-way ones, with all of the 'L2s' joined together, and with that line connected to L by a switch just inside the front door. That meant that when she subsequently came home, by operating that switch just inside the front door, she could turn on all virtually all the lights in the house (there was, needless to say, just one lighting circuit in the house back then).
