Hi all,

Over the past year ive got into mining crypto. Ive had a 10mm cable run from a 40amp fuse to my workshop about 15m away from the main board. The cable is run along the wall, not in insulation/trunking etc.

I believe i am pulling close to 40 amps now, but the cable and fuse are hot. With my IR thermometer the 40amp fuse reads at 59 degrees and the cable at 37. My electrician has been out again and says its fine, the fuse will trip if it gets much warmer though, but thats the point to protect the circuit etc. It just im pulling so much power.

Does this sound ok to other electricians or would anyone have any other recommendations?

Thanks.

You're going to need to strike lucky with the crypto to pay your electricity bill at that rate!

Sorry,
Not helpful to your situation, but is your setup running 24/7?
9.2kW per hour,
80.5MW per year
At average 14p per kWh
£11300 per annum bill, plus normal household electricity?

Cables and other current carrying items heat up when in use. It's inevitable and caused by the resistance of the cables.

Standard PVC insulated cables are rated to 70C conductor temperature at full load. The outer covering will be slightly cooler.

High continuous loads need to be notified to the electricity network operator, as the networks were not designed for such things.

As above - this will be costing you a fortune in electricity use.

Yes electrcity is alot, im not sure how viable it will be with everyone going under and the rates going up. At the moment in time its still profitable mind. We do have solar panels but i dont think it touches the sides lol

Do those temps sound ok then flame? I knew it could get to 70 but wasent sure how insulated the cable would be and effect the outer temps.

My supplier has just issued me with new intended electricity kw rates... from .16p to .23p, so that crypto bill may be higher:eek:

Dare I ask what hardware is actually using all that leccy?

I had a coronary when my new coffee machine uses 2000 watts :D

You should be glad it's not gas powered!
That would be a fortune at current prices!

Excuse my ignorance, but why does crypto-mining require more than one graphic card, yet alone multiple high-powered graphics cards?
With all that power you should be able to run a district heating scheme :D.
