Hi,

Anyone have any idea what this thing is. I found it about 4" below the surface of the soil. It wobbles but I gave up trying to dig it out of the heavy clay soil once I was a spade depth deep. It is some kind of drain?

Thanks
James

I have something like that!
In my case it was the capped off soil pipe for the outside loo! :)

I was thinking old soil pipe for outdoor toilet too.

Can't be from an outdoor toilet... it's in the front garden about 4m in front of the house.

could be an old vent pipe for a septic tank that someone has closed off .

If it is that, does that mean I have a septic tank buried down there too, or could the septic tank be some way away? My house is 1950s so I imagine it's always been on the drains that serve our row of ex-council semis, but I happen to know that the large older house across the road (~20 m away) had a septic tank until 2016 (because that's when they connected into the drain system via my drive!). Could they have been venting their septic tank on my property!?

All the houses down our street have a pipe coming out of the ground near the front of the property. Mine is long buried in the flower bed with an old pot over the top of it. Our rainwater downpipes go straight into the ground - I think our pipes are a vent for the rainwater drain system.

This might not help in any way!
But have you looked at the ordnance survey map archive?
https://maps.nls.uk/os/
They are absolutely fascinating and may (though unlikely!) show if any historic structures were in that location?

Interesting for sure! There is a black dot labelled GP near where it is. Key says that's either Gas Plug, or guide (sign) post. See no need for a sign post there, so now I'm wondering what on earth a gas plug is!
