Sand down to remove all loose/flaking paint then use a primer followed by 2 coats of undercoat. Finally finish with a good quality gloss coat. It has to stand up to all sorts of weather so it's better to do it right than have to keep getting up to do it again. It will also help it to resist rot and weathering much longer.

Thanks is there a single type of paint that can do the lot. I'm thinking I'm likely to change the barge board in next 3-5 years. If not I'll do the proper job

There are some paints that claim they will cover in 1 coat but ones I've tried in the past have been rubbish and usually take at least 2 coats.
I think the only way to do a job such as this is the correct way, and who knows, if you do you may not need to replace them in 3-5 years time.

Nowt lasts long, if that faces the weather. I would simply get some UPVC and cover it permanently and no more painting to do - ever.
