yes i think your right about the cement board. can you link me to the plastic fascia you used or something similar.I successfully used some plastic fascia board . I think cement board may be too weak

How about a concrete gravel board?
Considered this, but couldn't find any post short enough to support this. Posts would need to be about 400mm high. I dont think I could cut them down aswell as I believe they are reinforced...

You don't have to use a concrete post to support a concrete gravel board, you could drill through the gravel board and fix in to a timber post.
