A load of tosh. These grapes are sweeter now than when I bought them a month ago. Still got at least a week left on them too.

'Use before' gets ignored by me if my eyes and nose tell me different although something perfectly edible at 11:59pm will become inedible at 12:01am by Mrs Mottie if the date on the wrapper tells her so. I've lost count of the times I've gone to the fridge to get a snack, only to find that she's had a purge and all 'use by's' are in the bin.

I agree. I never eat grapes before the date, I wait until the vine has shrivelled up and the grapes are falling off, I do the same with tomatoes.
I don’t eat bananas until they are getting dark marks on them, either.
They are picking fruit and vegetables way before it is ripe in order for it to have a long shelf life, the stuff is nowhere near ready to be eaten and once is is removed from the plant, it will never ripen properly.

Bacon kept in fridge quite safely eat it 6 months after sell by date

"Best before" and "use by" have different meanings
I ignore all those dates and just go by eyes and smell.
Although probably with meat , i maybe a little more cautious.
As a kid i can remember with strawberry jam, scrapping any mold off the top and still using.
And we did not have any dates on stuff anyway , cans with dates always get me!!!!

.

I suppose having to get your 5 a day from local skips has it drawbacks?

"Best Before" just means the food may start to deteriorate after that date.

Eg bread, cheese and fruit goes hard or mouldy or biscuits go soft.

But be careful with "Use By", though, after which correctly stored foods such labelled may not be safe to eat due to growth of dangerous bacteria etc.

My best is some BBE 2015 tin of anchovies. :censored: I ate last year.
You know, the ones at that fell off the carousel.

Best before dates are a total swizz.

Wait a minute your saying grapes you bought on or before 27 September are still good to eat on 2 November? They've lasted 5 weeks?

So you keep them in the fridge presumably? Because I don't like grapes from the fridge, so never store them in there but will give it a try.

i dont like strawberries from fridge , but keep them in the fridge and then take out the day to eat - usually the date on the box is accurate and some are moulding

Raspberries are the worse - I've had some go mouldy the day after I've got them home from the shop!
