What’s the best way to finish this roof window?

Hi all, had a side extension built with glass panels in a pitched roof. Had the glass fitted today and they have made a pig’s ear of it. Ok from inside, but from the it outside looks awful.

The glass goes over an exterior wall, they have used a white trim and plastic floor protection to close the wall off, fixed with drywall screws. To top it off there is a gap under the glass that lets a draft in.

Has anyone any advice on a better way to do this? Obviously black trim would make a big difference but would like something more professional, especially for the closing panels rather than just corrugated plastic floor protection

WTF? Surely you discussed the arrangement of the window with respect to the wall prior to ordering?

Yes, the opening is quite narrow so this gave the maximum amount of glass. We looked at other options but would have meant a tiny opening. Looks great inside, it’s down the side of the house so isn’t too visible.

The window should be shorter so the frame sits on the inner skin, then probably a bit of lead on top of the roof bit you got rid of down into the gutter. Anything you do other than that is just a bodge. Guessing building control aren't involved.

Thanks - it’s not me doing the work, I have a building form and yes building control are fully involved.

This is a very similar situation that occurs on roof lanterns. It just needs an EPDM or similar UV stable foam strip to seal the gap between the wall and glass, and a suitable aluminium extrusion or timber to hold the strip. Whoever designed the window should have detailed this.

BTW, if the cavity has been finished like in your sketch, that's completely wrong

Thankyou Woody, what’s the issue with the cavity? They will be putting it right

Yes it is closed, the diagram is just for explanation purposes.

What are the white ugly plastic strips for?

Exactly!!

they are taking the windows out to redo them.

I need some form of black boarding/cladding to put under the glass to hide the wall - any ideas what we can use? Needs to be 2-5mm and black

Glaziers normally blackout that area with a dark film to hide that sort of thing.

Thanks, I think that’s what they are planning to do, not sure if the film will be going on the inside or outside of the glass, or if it even matters?
