Hi

I have a project where I'm turning some window openings into french doors, i.e. cutting down and keeping the existing lintels.

Two openings, 1.5m apart, one 1700mm and the other 2060mm. I've been advised that the 2060mm opening is too wide for a pair of doors and I would have to have either sidelights or aluminium folding, triple pane. £££! I've done some of my own homework and gather I can in fact go up to about 2000mm with a pair of doors and use a 25mm addon at either side. How unsightly is this/would you do it?

What's everyone's opinions?!

Thanks.

Doors often have extensions pieces only on the hinge side to keep the hinges away from the wall internally. Although these extensions are usually smaller than 25mm, no-one takes any notice of them or comments that the door is no longer central in the brickwork opening. I would say that 25mm extensions on both sides would look fine.

Thanks for the quick reply - Is that what you'd do then? Obviously the addon at both sides would centralise the doors, but I've also been warned that the doors of this size would sag and catch. Is that right?

Thanks again.
