For me depends 150 cash for first hour sounds reasonable, its all about the limited choice after 6pm versus how much you dont want your house to flood till you get someone else in business hours.

Depending on how nice natured they were and how long it took me say half hour id possibly knock that price myself for good customer relations.

There wouldn't BE a gate valve going to a CWST, only from it.
And if you were concerned, tie the friggin ballvalve up and empty it.
You seem to want to do a lot of unnecessary work..

A pro would often just bung it or freeze the pipe of course, for a rad valve.

And have you ever had a Gate valve you've closed not open up again? You do what you think is best by using your experience over the last 100 years or so

Are you telling me that they need a degree?

I'm talking about the basic plumber not a heating engineer. Even I could fit taps, rads etc,all you need to have is a toolbag and be relatively fit

That's what gets people into trouble. Plumbing is more skilled than heating...
Getting it right can be just as important

Tying a ball valve up is the same as turning the mains off and draining it.

Its easier to turn off the mains than going into a loft, also not able to freeze 100mm of pipe work sticking out of the floor board.

Out of hours I tell them it's to make safe.. then give them a cost to fix in normal hours.

One early 12 midnight call I had to get them drinking water back on as they had one main shared stop cock for 3 houses

But I repeat, because you're a bit slow on the uptake, that you don't need to go changing gate valves to tend to a leaky rad valve.

So far you've been very unimpressive. You're trying to suggest I don't know what I'm talking about but have only succeeded in making yourself look wrong quite a lot. As you ought to know, there shouldn't be a gate valve on the supply from a heating header tank. Someone like you might try to close it, have it break then leave the system in a dangerous condition. Imagine, if it were a combined feed and vent.

£150 callout and first hour is reasonable for a middle of day bank holiday, I'd say. On the high side for an ongoing rate, ime. More if it's silly o'clock.
Of course you can ASK whatever you like as a sole cowboy. Firms' rates tend to be fixed.

As said, once it's not leaking, which shouldn't take more than an hour unless you want to go doing unnecessary work to build the job like removing irrelevant gate valves, the rest can be left for normal hours.
