Pensioner Rides The Bus All Day To Keep Warm

Whilst it's obviously good that we live in a democratic country, our political parties and many of those within them leave a lot to be desired. What a great choice we have come the local elections. There 'is' correlation between stories like this and the economic model we operate within i.e. capitalism. The rich are getting richer whilst the poor, well, you get the idea.

I'm not an advocate of people getting so much state assistance that they never have any need/desire to seek employment (there's a balance to be struck) however when it comes to things like heating, I feel more has to be done for those on low incomes including the elderly. No, I don't think everyone should be able to run the heating at 25 degrees 24/7 for £50 a month, however neither is it right that some genuinely have to choose between heat vs eat.

there seem to be quite a few pensioners clubs, day centres, lunch clubs etc

I knew someone who volunteered locally, either on the minibus going round to collect them and take them home, or helping in the kitchen.

I've not been to a Library for more than 30, possibly even 40 years but I know most have closed or only open a few hours a few days a week so pensioners cant go there to keep warm.

I've not been on a bus for donkey's years, are buses warm in the cold weather?

.

My average bus journey in London the morning is about 40 mins. I am often happy to get off the bus to warm up.

Years ago I was working in Baron's Court. I used to stay on the tube and go one stop further to Earl's Court so that I would end up "underground" (just to warm up).

thanks for that. Possibly there is a heater under some seat and the person sits there.

Good post. Defining a "low income" will results in millions getting more help. A way around this is possibly those aged pension age all get some extra top up regardless of income as I'm fed up with the workshy getting everything for naff all.

Another option is to move to shelter place as often heating inc in rent and many dont pay rent as they do not have a penny to their name.

TBF, if you get on a bus later in the morning the heating will have kicked in. First thing in the morning, they are cold.

That said, if you spend more than 90 mins on the tube, your journey is flagged as being incomplete and you are charged a premium for an incomplete journey (about £9). Buses, you get kicked out at the end of the route.

I suspect that the Daily Mail is not being completely honest- whoda thunk it? That said, I didn't follow the link.

I don’t think the take away from this story is whether our buses are warm or not.

I think the pertinent point is that we have pensioners trying to sit on a bus all day to stay warm.

My pension age mother is in panic about how she is supposed to pay these energy costs while the Tory government has committed to doing next to f/a about the situation.

True re DM
In London, you get a 60+ free bus and train pass and then a pensioner's free travel pass when you reach the state pension.

People buying a house/apartment try to buy south facing makes a difference re heating costs.

Perhaps they are on the bus all day because they have misunderstood this advert .

Some pensioners near Gatwick air port would spend all day in there so as to keep
Warm plus it saved money

sad fact (maybe ?) as that some pensioners would be better off or looked after better in a prison ????

Out of interest, what are the Labour, LibDems or anyone else's practical alternatives to deal with the price the major oil producing companies sell their product for and the prices the major users are prepared to pay to keep costs high in the capitalist free trade market?
