Salmon Rushdie

Must admit I have never read his book(s) and have zero interest tbh

Dare say the majority of all the fruit cakes that went on some book burning protest over the caper did either

If I recall some uk based mad muler
Went out to Iran and convinced or partioned that Iranian fruit cake to issue a fatwa

And than top it all off we have thousands ??? of these like minded fruit cakes paddling across the channel

Or free speech by the sounds of it. Have you read the book?
Out of curiosity, I started to read it on my kindle last night. Two blokes fell out of a plane that blew up at 29,000 feet above the English Channel and survived when they landed in the channel…. I’m surprised anyone got past page 5 as that’s when I gave up!

It's in the same kind of sphere as Harry Potter novels, or Lord of the Rings, even James Bond novels, not really related to reality.

Sadly when an ideology becomes indefensible, some will seek any means to prevent it being questioned or scrutinised.
That applies to religion, politics, morals, wars, mythology, etc.

Let us hope that SR recovers, mentally and physically.

He ended up in the west thinking he was safe, he enjoyed the rewards of mocking his own people in return for the adulation of the Western liberal elites….
..and 'Fatwa sex'. When Larry from 'curb your enthusiasm' had a Fatwa on him and was in disguise.…

AFAIK, Monty Python only insulted Christians, i watched the 'Life of Brian' which was, admittedly funny if not exactly Blasphemous to people from a Christian point of view
Quite a few found it Blasphemous, TV debates with Bishops, one town in Wales , Aberystwyth, refused to allow it to be shown at the cinema there. I can't remember any Christians issuing death threats to any of the Python team, they just had a jolly good laugh at themselves. The actress who played Judith in the film later became mayor of Aberystwyth.

The Blasphemy laws were only rescinded in 2008 in Britain.
They still apply in NI.

We need more public figures to be critical of islam alone, rather than critical of all religions.
Don't be silly, that would inflame tension between Islam and Christianity. Maybe that is what you want, but it would not be good for society as a whole.
A better way is for a secular government, where government is totally separated from any kind of, and all, religious belief.
Unfortunately, while the sovereign is head of the Anglican Church, that is not possible. Unless the constitution was changed to allow a sovereign of any, or no, faith.

Same sort of thing happened in France over that cartoon caper

Plus some teachers were threatened over some school lesson

If I recall one teacher was bumped off ??? Or attacked ???

I recall that former liberal party leader who got a lot of grief over his Christian beliefs ?? Pretty much hounded out over the caper

Blimey if he had been of the Islamic religion no one would have dared mention it ???? Or bring it up in debates ???

Honestly who gives a sh1te. Idiots like this just exist to provoke and incite and then act dumb and stupid when people react to his provocations.

Reap what you sow.

Anyway has Severn Trent announced a hosepipe ban yet?
I give a sh1t.

As long as someone isn't doing anything illegal, they should be free to openly analyse, discuss, criticise and even ridicule religions. NO religion should be exempt.

In open democratic countries we'd be going down a very dangerous path if we started to encourage people not to do the aforementioned things, not just with religion but with anything.

Otherwise you're on the slippery slope to living in some form of dictatorship.
