Barristers striking

Regardless of the ins and outs, regardless of what the truth actually is around much of this stuff, people across various sectors are becoming increasingly p1ssed off about low wages and/or wages that don't rise sufficiently when compared to cost of goods and services. On top of this, we see story after story about CEOs and top tier managers receiving remuneration rises away above inflation. Then we get lectured at as to why it's right for companies to pay top dollar (or above) for CEOs etc even though the company in question might not be delivering ... but we've to be happy with little or no rise.

Stop using as much water! (even though we're losing a trillion litres of it a year through leaks)

Although I'm not anti-capitalist, was it not sold on the notion of wealth 'trickling down'? I think people are increasingly seeing through this and starting to question stuff more.

4. This makes my blood boil:
A logistic company that has just taken over from another one, stated that despite the TUPE regulations, they are introducing new policies and reviewing contracts in all aspects.
THEY PUT THIS IN WRITING!
When challenged and threatened with Employment Tribunal, they shamelessly said that out of 300 employees, only a couple would go that far and they're ready to pay them out (WTFx3! They didn't put this in writing)
Well what do you expect?

They've been given the green light to indulge in such practices...

"P&O Ferries will not face criminal action over the way it fired nearly 800 employees earlier this year, the Insolvency Service has said.
The firm sacked staff without notice in March, replacing them with foreign agency workers who were paid less than the UK minimum wage.
The government agency said that, following a "full and robust criminal investigation", there was "no realistic prospect of a conviction".

Companies are often above the law, and trampling on worker's rights is just another part of the 'great reset'!

So on a nice whack then? ;)
Apprentices are on less than minimum wage. Senior staff are merely paid badly for the level of education, skill, training and experience.

Which is why the number of companies offering criminal law services has (I think) halved on the last decade. They're moving into other bits of law where the pay is better. Which is fine but then who prosecutes or defends people?

Easy problem, just give everybody a 20% pay rise, across the board. Except Daily Express journalists, that is. They deserve a 30% increase. Making stuff up all day is very taxing work.

I've known two barristers in the last few years. Both driven by getting justice for people.
One was doing OK at about 35, but I remember being surprised by what he told me about his path to a tolerable pay. He mostly did legal aid work. Brain the size of Essex, he could have earned very much more elsewhere.

The other was younger, about to give up . Look up "pupillage" - you grovel to get accepted then earn a pittance less payng all your considerable costs.. Something like 7 years from starting his law degree, he was earning less than a shelf-filler. The most annoying thing was that it wasn't due solely to low wages, but ridiculous costs, and a thoroughly inept system. He'd had enough, he was going to start property developing. I told him about my dabblings which I think convinced him even more.

These folk have enormous respect for the law, justice, maintaining a good system, doing the right thing. Yet they get deplorable treatment from that system which deserves disdain, not respect.

I do think we need to be careful what we wish for on some of this stuff. I don't believe politicians when they (through a faux reassuring smile) tell us worker rights will be retained if not improved as we 'move forward.' It's all just rhetoric and hot air in an attempt to keep the masses in their lane.

It's not rocket science and tbh, it shouldn't be rocket science (economics I mean) however it's conveniently made complex to ensure most folk don't understand or lose interest. Meanwhile, the rich get richer while ...

I said it in another thread. Remember all the bullsh1t near the start of covid about needing to reassess the role of carers, ensuring they receive decent pay and conditions and to ensure it's thought of as a valued career. How much do you think has been done about that?

Levelling up or whatever slogan they want to give it. How long has that been talked about? I'll guarantee they'll be talking about 'fixing the north' 5, 10, 15, 20 years from now.

I'll guarantee 5,10,15,20 years from now there'll still be millions of litres of water leaking daily and sh1t overly expensive train services.

We the masses need to be kept in our lane to ensure the world, economically, keeps turning. Fine. What's not fine for many is the relative pittance they're expected to live on to work x hours a week to play their part in delivering it.

I would agree that those at the bottom of the pay scale should get a pay rise

You really don't want a system of law where lawyers only get paid if they win.

The pay scales for criminal barristers has been cut in real terms by something like 25% over the last decade.

I'd be striking in their shoes.

The average income is apparently £47,000. That's before outgoings I believe as they're contractors.

Apparently the average income for a plumber is £35,000.

Not unlike chief executives such as, say, Dido Harding, or politicians, like Boris Johnson, for example

Quite agree

But they are not on strike as far as I know

Same as this train driver caper

Blimey how hard can it be to drive a train ffs ?

2 week course in train driving and that would be pushing it ?
