Household Fuel choice

Hi,
I had my question answered earlier, but I did have this thought!
If the heat escapes from a house, which cools it down, could a heat pump be used to capture it in the floor, wall and roof space and return it into the centre of the house?

A neighbour had an Air Source Heat Pump installed which he said was "no more expensive to run than gas central heating", I took that to mean that it was no cheaper to run than the gas central heating that he had before. He does have solar panels on the roof and a small wind turbine in his garden. A few months later he had a log burner installed, I guess that the ASHP isn't as effective as his gas central heating. Apparently the ASHP was 3-4 times the cost of a new gas boiler and still needs an annual service.

Hi P,
I haven't looked into Heat pumps much, but as we don't have annual servicing of our fridge/freezers, which are heat pumps, I assume that soon they won't need much attention either.
It would have been interesting if your neighbour had compared £ to output, like the earler answer did.
Things are improving all of the time.

Two things not on your list...poo and plastic.

Fuel can be made from excrement, human or animal. It is already being done, but not much. It's the ultimate renewable, it will never be in short supply and its availability will always be in proportion to the population.

Plastics... we are told they are "non-recyclable", yet they are derived from oil and they burn easily. We throw away tons of the stuff...why is there no interest in using this massive resource?

Hi A,
There are a lot of things not on my list and they all could count.
How I work things out is:
Regarding poo and plastic. If each person burnt all of their plastic and poo at home, it wouldn't heat their house for long
I think with burning plastic, people don't want the burners near them, and possibly worries about greenhouse gasses?

Regarding electric cars and fuel generators: If all the cars in a road took out there ICE engines and fitted electric motors, and all of their engines were put at the end of that road as one big generator (so to speak) there would be excess power, because ether they aren't being run at their optimum efficiency or they've stopped etc.

In the 70s, one of my jobs was to take readings from a series of pumped insulated pipes in loops, that were supposed to be for district heating. didn't hear any more about it?

Insulate.

A good woolly jumper is probably best value

Knickers.

Long legged woolly ones, and vests.

Hi M and J,
How true! I have my long Johns, wooly jumper and bobble hat on standby.

because people are being told outright lies about running costs and how good they actually are
Hi G,
I'm not sure they are lies, but I suppose it depends on who you ask. I don't look at sales sites.
I think they are comparable with gas at the moment, but not worth changing to, if all's working.
I'm sure it will change in the future though.
