Upstairs landing walls have been freshly skimmed ready for painting. SWMBO has decided one of the bedroom doors should open the other way. Easy enough. But now the lightswitch is behind the door so need to move it.

When I’ve done it previously, I just hammer and bolster to chase out. My only concern now is the bedroom wall is singe brick and the other side (hallway) is newly skimmed and I don’t want to create cracks. Bedroom walls will be lined and painted.

Any good suggestions on how to proceed?

You can use a grinder or chasing tool to make the outline of the chase and cross-hatch across the box. Lots of dust but no vibration so won't damage the other side. Then minimal force needed to knock out the chase and box.

Put the door back to the original opening position

Just for completeness - I once had to carve out a box hole in a house brick wall (in our conservatory). And I didn't want to damage the brick face outside that area. So I used a dremel with appropriate bits. I have to say the hole was perfect, though it took rather a long time.

It was cutting wheel to mark the outline, and a sort of tile cutting tool to remove the material.

Put a blank plate where the switch is and fit a quinetic switch and reciever.....job done

Yes, it's not the cheapest option, but it is mess-free.
