The other week he was saying no going back on Brexit.

This week he's saying something I've been saying for some time. We must end our dependency on cheap foreign labour.

By jove, I think he's getting it. He might even get my vote if he keeps up the good work!

Why's that, exactly?
If someone wants to pick fruit for our minimum wage, which may be a lot more than they'd get in their own land, why shouldn't they come to do it?
Or spend a summer serving in a bar, say.
?

Until people, like families with mortgage (if they can get 1) and kids can afford to live on their wage without support then there will always be a need for cheap (imported) labour.

The only way to change it, is to alter the difference between wealthy and the poor. Are you ready for that?

Sadly his proposals won't touch the serious labour shortage currently being experienced.
The skilled visa scheme doesn't cater for unskilled or semi skilled workers.

Hey Mottie I'm with you. I'm like what he's saying. He may get my vote too.

The rationale is no one should have to work for a sh1tty wage, even if you're simply picking fruit.

In a way this links with the other thread about (sometimes) difficult conversations we need to have around things like healthcare and best ways to fund. In the case of wages, we as a (UK) society need to decide, do we want to maintain a (sometimes) race to the bottom with wages, or do we want a society where everyone earns better than a sh1tty wage. The consequence will be higher prices for the consumer. So, do we want that or do we not?

I reckon if we continue to have sh1tty paid jobs, many UK born citizens simply don't want to do them. Result? We need foreign workers to plug the gap. Then folk moan about 'blo0dy foreigners taking our jobs!!!' Ah the joys ...

Kier Starmer just spouts the obvious, great soundbites but no realistic plan to achieve it.

You are right. But higher wages that force higher prices doesn't answer anything.

It's having enough money to live a life properly (cost of living) that is important. A much bigger issue than just raising wages.

But I agree any working person should be able to afford a decent living.

He is triangulating.

The biggest political issue at present is how to stop these migrants coming and how to get rid of those already here. Any party with a realistic plan of how to do this would win a landslide victory at election, and therefore Kier is making noises in that direction, whilst not being so blatant about it as to alienate his own anti-British party.

He is talking nonsense of course, because, as we know, politicians forget their promises once elected.

He's saying more than that. The end of cheap labour model that the UK has been using for "growth". That doesn't just apply to migrants. They are one of the sources. He then mentions training. Think of butchers and Indian chefs. ;) My favourite choice. Having to import is crazy. Train instead.

He is also saying he has to be pragmatic about it. Visas needed in some areas until things even out.

It's a tough aim to have but just let things carry on as they are? Various ways can be used to get companies to work as they need to from a political stand point. It appears one is being tried on corporation tax at the moment.

Some companies bring in consultants for help with NVQ's and health and safety training. Afraid the reasons they do that are rather selfish. Risk assessments have their interesting points as well.

the best way to grow the economy is rebuild a closer relationship with EU and increase foreign workers -its the low hanging fruit.

hopefully Conservatives will ignore that because they are hostage to the ERG, so we will see 2 more years of sh1t economy, then Labour can take over and sign a Swiss deal and increase immigration

Starmer is only pandering to the brexit munchers

There's 800,000 that could be utilised better than they are now, who leave school only to languish in the doldrums on useless college and university courses.
Starmer would have to turn round Bliars socialising everyone as being equal ****** to do that though. Don't think he'd get much traction in this soppy society we have generated since we joined the eu.

Make up your mind I was a daily mail reader yesterday.
You like to do power of suggestion notchy because of your limited ability to think for yourself, much easier to be zombie personified.

But that doesn't apply any more - they are NOT sh1tty wages. Our minimum wage is nearly the highest in Europe.
It's 2 to 10 times the minimum across most of Europe.
Fruit pickers earn about the same as the supermarket delivery drivers. For foreign workers working the summer they're good jobs if they're fit enough; there's often cheap accommodation as well Too much like hard work for Brits.

So FFS what IS the problem?
