Hi all,

I've been searching a while and cant find an answer, so apologies in advance if this seems a common question.

SE has told me I need a 600x215x100 padstone for some steelwork. I can not find one anywhere. I/he is happy to use a lintel and cut it down but I am struggling to find a lintel with the 215x100 section.

I live in the Sheffield area so although I can find a couple of merchants who seem to advertise, they are about 3 hours drive away.

Does anyone have any thoughts? SE has suggested casting my own with at least a 30N comp strength... I feel like if he was happy enough for me to cast my own then I don't see why he wouldn't risk letting me use a 440x215x100 - but he isn't, so I cant.

So I would be grateful for any help on potential suppliers, or if anyone knows a mix for casting my own.

Kinds regards,

Mark.

Can't you use 2x 100mm wide lintels?

A bearing plate?

Blue bricks?

I've asked him on the phone and he says it HAS to be those dimensions minimum to spread the load onto the 7n blocks below and then down the rest of the wall.

My limited knowledge doesn't give me the tools to suggest anything different. Although I feel like there should be a way I can use a 440 pad on something else to spread the load?

Mark.

Yes, but he didnt seem to like the idea of stacking lintels together. I really don't get why as there are mortar joints going down the whole of the wall!

Class B engineering bricks in 1:3 mortar 665long by 300mm deep to form an engineering brick pad stone.

This is a very standard type of pad stone and you SE should approve it with no questions

It's not just the ratio but the type of sand/gravel, but how it's made, compacted and cured. Which is why your engineer suggesting that you should make this yourself rather than use something ready made, is nonsense.

Yup, I agree and dont feel completely comfortable doing this way. Feels like its kind of just shifting the responsibility/blame onto me should anything occur down the line. At this stage, it doesn't help with BC, though.

You can get a bag of 40n concrete, just add water from Wickes for a tenner. I used a couple of bags inside the tray of a recessed inspection cover and it seemed easy enough to use

I feel like making the formwork would be the tricky part in your case.
Appreciate that, thankyou.

I just thought it would be a case of making a ply box. I would probably not try and cast it in situ but cast it then put it in place when dry.

Is that just local supply issues? It's quite a common lintel size.

Unfortunately taking risks would mean you aren't insured. Must be a pretty weighty steel beam though.
It must be a supply issue as none of the big merchants are stocking it. They are all suggesting they would have to order it especially but the transport costs are rediculous.
