We have a very old red sandstone house so solid walls. We have a number of cupboards on the external walls and original features which are so cold what best way to insulate.

You could batten the wall and fit insulation board leaving an air gap between wall and board. But that would involve ripping out the cupboard so maybe just fit insulation at the back and sides, however you will lose space,

Nothing is going to make cupboards magically warmer, except a heater.

Insulation stops warm air getting out as well as cold air getting in. But if the rest of the room is uninsulated there are plenty of other opportunities for the room to lose heat.
