In the past week, I have had two scam text messages, of the form 'Mum I broke my phone and.... No, I am obviously no one's mum....

I know my Iphone has the built in means to block all calls from callers not in my contact list, but I do sometimes get genuine calls from people not in the list, so I need a way to allow them to get through.

My landline phone system has a call blocker, which is always on - it blocks all calls not in my list, phone doesn't even ring when others call, but unknown callers are given a message saying press # and say your name. My phones then ring, allowing me to hear who they are and accept their call. Spammers, and scammers never press #, so my phones only ever ring on genuine calls.

Is there an Iphone app able to do similar process of auto-blocking, yet allow callers a way through for the genuine texts and phone calls please?

All I do if I don't know the number is answer it, listen but don't say anything and if it’s a sales/scam call I end the call and block that number.

Trouble is - they ring / text from a number, then never ring from that number again, so blocking is mostly pointless.

I think they only have a certain bank of numbers to chose from. It works for me, eventually!

I do the same as Mottie. Answer but don't speak. Quite often they ring off as soon as you press the accept button.

I have that landline blocker as well and it is very very good. Blocks the scammers 100%. Those calls that I would want are also blocked unless they are in the list but if those callers cannot be bothered to say who they are that's their problem. I don't think there is anything remotely as good for cell phones although as I wouldn't ever buy an apple product I wouldn't know about apple. But I'm pretty sure there isn't anything as good for apple junk either.

I have actually tried it before. They never ring back on the same number.
Don’t answer then if you are not expecting a call - a genuine caller would leave a message and you can call them back. Just recently I’ve had calls from NatWest and Thames Water. On both occasions they texted first telling me the number they would be calling from.

I've never missed a genuine caller, when I've been in. It seems most of the genuine callers, doctors, hospitals and commercial organisations, are used to these systems, and know how to deal with them. The scammers and spammers, use auto-dialers, which are not clever enough to listen to the recorded message.

You would think it would be such an easy thing to implement, and so effective. I've found blockers, which allow the phone to ring, but show on the screen that the call is a scam caller, but I don't even want my phone to ring at all.

If you get a scam text you report it , the number is then taken down by the phone company .If you don’t report it , it will continue .

You wouldn't want your own number taken down. Scammers often spoof the caller number as the called number. Would the phone company be able to detect that?
