Just out of curiosity

When pulling a new cable through in the loft, I noticed there is plasterboard on top of all the internal block walls.

Really interested in the construction method if anyone would care to explain :)

Ceilings boarded before the walls built?
Appears to be. So would that indicate none are supporting walls, although they could be buttress (dont have any knowledge of either). Is it usual to build the outer four walls of a bungalow, then plasterboard all the ceilings before building the block internal walls?

If there are no actual structural members resting on the wall then its not supporting. Sometimes these walls give adventitious support to ceiling joists and prevent some sag, although not strictly required for that purpose.

Internal domestic walls are rarely/never designed for nor providing buttressing.

It would be "non-standard" to board the ceilings before forming the walls, mainly for logic and practicality, but not unheard of.

Thank you for that info, really interesting. Will see what else I can reveal when I chase the walls out up to the ceiling !

might help with airtightness to keep the ceiling plasterboard continuous, then you've only got the perimeter of the house to leak.

Took a look, and the block work finishes about 15mm below the plasterboard with a bed of mortar filling the gap. More interesting for me, is a 'square web of string' between the wall and plaster over the mortar bed. I don't have a clue about building, but it looks very neat lol

Our 1960 bungalow had the plasterboard fitted over the walls, then final blocks layed up to the plasterboard.
Problem has been the ceilings are a little sagged in the centre from the weight of plasterboard that was unsupported, with such a large span

My 1930s house had the same, plasterboard all ceilings with old flimsy 5mm plasterboard before internal walls went up on floorboards.

Sounds like an old type of scrim tape... we found the same in our 50's bungalow
