Stereo sound.

TV not playing stereo even though the setting for stereo is turned on... Playstation outputting 2 channel linear PCM audio... Listening through internal TV speakers rated at 2x10W I do understand you will need speakers to the left and right of you to hear the stereo sound however, my laptop can do stereo fine with it in front of me. Is there anything I need to do? I can change the settings from stereo to dual I and dual II on the TV.

What TV do you have?
Through the Playstation, run a "Stereo sound test" on YouTube and see if the stereo effect is discernable - sometimes TV stereo sound separation is just poor.

It's a Toshiba (unsure of the model number)

Maybe it's because I'm sitting quite a bit of a distance away from the TV? TV is wall mounted BTW.

Would plugging in headphones let you test if the stereo is working? Do the headphones receive the same output as the speakers?

Yes, I have just checked and I can hear the stereo sound. L and R both output stereo respectively. However, the stereo output is not as good as my laptop does. You have to be paying attention to notice the stereo on the TV.

On the dual I channel the L speaker stays muted.
On the dual II channel the R speaker stays muted.

There's no way I could tell whether my TV was giving stereo or not with a movie. I'm about twelve feet away.

They can output stereo. But from twelve feet away, I just don't think it's possible to distinguish one channel from the other when the speakers themselves are so close together. I'm not an audio expert, so hopefully somebody else will give an opinion.

With speakers a couple of feet apart, and sitting a fair distance from the TV, stereo separation will deteriorate. Ideally speakers and listener should be located at the points of an equilateral triangle - sitting at a laptop (or using headphones), you are much closer to this placement.

The TV is decoding stereo, it can provide a stereo output to other devices, such as AV amps & sound bars, etc. for better stereo separation; but within the limitations of its size and speaker placement, it is doing the best that it can!

And don't forget the nature of TV shows - they are different from the immersive nature of video games (where the sound is purely artificial - it can be placed anywhere on the soundstage), or movies (enhanced for the surround sound experience of cinemas) - TV productions usually have characters placed front and centre; two small stereo speakers may be more than adequate to create the illusion that the dialogue is actually coming out from the centre of the screen.

it's a con. Some claim to do ATMOS which is just daft.

If you want good sound, get some external amp/speakers.
