Heavy duty brenton bolt

Got one of these to use with my double doors:




I was advised to keep the bolt and keep away from the edge of the door in case it needs planing at some point. By the time I allow for this on both sides and the gap in the middle, I think it will be like this:




Doesn’t feel like much of the bolt is going into the keep.

I will use some bolts with the bolt and keep, so can’t keep shifting it around.

Can I get some help with this please. Many thanks.

Plane the other door I assume you mean? Hadn’t even crossed my mind. Genius!

Also, I need some sort of shoot bolt at the bottom of my second door. What do you recommend for this please? Don’t want it to keep sticking and getting jammed over time.

Ideally you’ll need a shoot bolt top and bottom.....also helps stop the doors from warping.
Sorry, can’t access the Screwfix site just now, but look for a heavy duty galvanised bolt with a pull handle.

I can see that the keep has a lot of space in it. This causes the first door to push out.

It wouldn’t be the first time I’ve flattened the dome of the keep to pull things in tighter!

A few taps with a hammer or something more substantial?
Is there any option to place something inside the keep to make it narrower? Thought that may look neater?

I just bray the keep flat with a hammer but you can push some thin plastic tubing within the keep but it’ll probably come back to haunt at some time.
Lets not forget, it’s just a shed bolt at the end of the day and not a particularly good one.
Is security a big deal? If it is, a hasp and staple bolted on below the Brenton will help.

I agree, it’s only a shed bolt and probably isn’t designed for that level of precision. I will try and line it with something. May be one of those plastic packets cut and glued inside.

Yes, that's the sort of thing - fully galvanised if possible and maybe another spring loaded one for the inside top of the door?
The copper sleeve - if it's usable - will really need to be in the keep, because if it's put on the bolt it may prevent it being fully withdrawn.

Do you have any pics for what you had in mind please? This may also fix the issue with the door flapping around in the keep.
