Hey!

Any ideas how much this would cost? Or how it would look… more storage would be amazing!

I know I need to de clutter (my girl had too much for Christmas off family!).

Your house is the one with the TV? So you're looking to build a fake chimney breast/fire surround, shelves off the side and cabinets below? Doing it all yourself, and willing to eg upcycle a pair of cabinets/mantel etc? I'd say around 500 quid, but it really depends on your taste and willingness to swap time for money..

Facebook ads for kitchen or fitted wardrobe removals can be a good place to pick up cabinetry. My little darlings' play room has a full wall of shelving behind sliding wardrobe doors (5 second hand space pro doors, 150 quid I think) to hide their proliferation of toys. I should do it in every room

Google 'IKEA hacks media wall' not that they're really hacks IMO if done properly, they're still a lot of work but can take a lot of the precise cabinetry work away.

Sometimes it's as easy to pick some say 300mm deep units (bedroom or kitchen type things) then incorporate these into your media wall. It saves on expensive bespoke items being tailor fitted.

I’ll look at the ikea pre built things. Otherwise it was making everything out of MDF but that would be priming and painting them… so having something which is already white would be great lol.

Yessss would need to create a chimney breast… and hopefully be able to bring the wood burner forward. Might then either place the TV on the shelves by the side or keep it above - not sure.

Right now it’s ok for me, but seems too high for my toddler if she’s playing on the floor - I am worried about her neck!)

Does everyone think the tv is too high currently?? I do. My partner and family say it’s fine height but I don’t think so.

https://www.google.co.uk/search?sca...EAHY4GHpUQtKgLegQIEhAB&biw=1588&bih=740&dpr=1 Well the 30s videos that pollute tiktok and the like don't really show the work involved and I would question their methods with regards to paint application and the seemingly lack of making the units more robust but I built a wall of shelves with Ikea Billy bookcases, a lot of work and they need reinforcement to prevent sagging but cost effective and fairly low skill required. One of these days I'll do a write up in Projects. There are a few good write-ups or blogs I suppose they'd be called for such things on the web but again many don't seem to bother reinforcing the shelves/units which I think is essential as effectively you're ending up with something fully built in and no access to beef them up afterwards Without any reinforcement Ikea units are a bit flaky. Plenty of youtube videos about beefing up Ikea units though.

The TV should be eye level when you're sat on your sofa.

TV should follow the same height guidelines as computer monitors for working at a desk, which means the typical mounting above a fire is far too high

Yeah agree! It’s ok when you are sat in the sofa - there’s a big distance between the tv and sofa but if you’re on the floor or closer it’s deffo too high up!

Hi everyone.

Where can i find steel to build the fake chimney breast?

I would need to bring the center of the wall out, so then I can use the ikea cabinets eitherside with floating shelves, but not s sure the material of the chimney breast. It will need to be fire proof, and would also need fire proof boards covering it.

I used metal stud (any builder merchants or BQ or Wickes has it) and 12.5mm no more ply to build my stove surround. No timber near the stove as a result

If it were me, I would get onto SketchUp or similar and really plan it out, consider if you want a skirting to match the existing to run around the floor, same with the coving, you'll probably need to be chopping back the floor finish, consider what kind of storage you want (or don't want) in the cupboards or will it all be shelves, think about the cable management and future proofing and having to re-thread cables up to the back of the TV, (I too would agree that the TV is too small for comfortable viewing given the size of the room (but could be the photo) so perhaps you might like to consider allowing for fitting a bigger TV in your Media Wall when the current TV packs up as it surely will.

I just wanted shelves up the top for photos and stuff and underneath just shelves again it completely empty cupboards with doors to hide the stupid amount of toys my girl has

I was going to get a smaller tv too, and have it on one of the side cabinets so it’s lower and more eye level! Right now it’s quite high?

The tv is actually quite big, the photo I took was really zoomed out - the living room isn’t that big!

Why? You literally have a massive exposed log sticking out of the wall inches above the fire. Timber stud work enclosed in cement board is not going to spontaneously combust..
