live wire for LED inline dimmer switch

Sorry, I'm a little confused.
You mention a live wire, but then you mention a plain black wire, and one with stippled white dots - which may suggest an (extra) low voltage DC LED system - especially as you then tell us about a soldered in dimmer switch.

Can you give us some more details of what you have, and post some photos?

Thanks. Pics uploaded.

Thanks you. Pics uploaded.Does that help ?
Thanks, but we still need more info.
What are the LEDs, do they have a separate power supply, if so what model is it?
What is the model of the dimmer, etc...
The picture you show does look like it could be a DC cable, but without further information, it's simply a shotgun cable with some markings on it.

Its just a strip LED operating with the mains. The dimmer switch is a cheap one bought on ebay. I did watch some youtube videos on how to connect but they all stress on identifying the live cable and since my cable is black I was stumped. Not a big thing just a lighting effect which needed to be dimmed. :)
