Hello Everyone

I`m about to start sprucing up my Dads old house prior to putting up for sale . He had dementia and consequently the house hasn`t been decorated in a long time , and the walls are very grubby . I don`t want to spend ages redecorating , but I`m thinking of making it presentable by repainting the walls and ceiling . The hallway is painted blown vinyl and the ceilings are just painted . My plan is to buy a large tin of Magnolia , and do the lot .

Question is " What paint should I buy " ?

I`d rather spend a bit more on a good quality paint rather than spend time having to re-coat several times . Any advice on what paint and tips on application would be gratefully received .

Thanks

My go to for years has been Leyland trade emulsion, often on offer from Screwfix which I see it is at the moment: https://www.screwfix.com/c/painting...and_trade&paintfinish=matt&rangename=contract

Personally I would have used white as it's much brighter and magnolia is just grim! Leyland is available atm in Magnolia though.
Cheers Freddie . Looks good value ! Is it the Trade or the Trade Contract ? (The Trade is 2x the price )

I`ll have a think about the colour , but TBH anything will be an improvement on the "Turquoise Grime" we currently have !! Just thought the magnolia would have a better chance of hiding it !

Leyland trade is good.
Wickes trade is also very good value for money.
Crown is one I avoid because I had coverage issues on 2 occasions, but I was possibly unlucky to get a bad batch.

Both my parents died from dementia , I cared for them

You have my deepest sympathy

I would do the ceilings in white x 2 , magnolia x2 walls

Wickes trade , as mentioned , is fine for this type of work

Much appreciated . I feel for you . That`s a huge commitment . We looked after my Dad for 10 years and only now starting to realise the enormity of the task !

I will take some comfort in getting his house back to something like the condition he would have had it in , before his illness .

Thanks again everyone for your suggestions .

Contract matt will be fine if you are selling up. Impossible to keep clean though. It is designed as paint for plaster that is still slightly damp. It has lower levels of acrylic/latex, hence, although inferior, it is significantly cheaper.

As a decorator, I steer clear of them when repainting previously painted walls. They are often pretty poor at covering dark scuff marks, requiring multiple coats.

"Cheap" paints make sense if your time has little or no monetary value.

Sorry about your old man.

Thanks for the advice , guys .

I went with the Leyland Trade in the end . White on the ceiling and magnolia on the walls . One coat was pretty good , but I gave the walls a 2nd coat as could see a few areas where the previous colour was showing through . Only £32 for 10L at B+Q , so worth the extra spend I think .

Sounds like a top job

Leyland , Mcphersons , Johnstones are pretty good paints

For bottom end work ....ie my house ...I use wickes

Dulux , Farrow and Ball ridiculously over priced
