Hello after all this talking about chimney my wife said to me for long time we remove chimney to create space
Could someone explain to me how it's Done? Of course I get builder in but I want to know the physics behind it. I know there is something called gallow bracket.
Thank you.
Richard

And will i need a beam if I removal everything from top to bottom?

The main physics behind it is gravity, and you probably want to avoid that playing a part.

Search other posts, but hats off to anyone that wants to spend the next few hours explaining how it's done.

I'll summarise -
Structural engineer or clued-up builder.
Building regulations
Party Wall Act

you are good person thank you at least you tell me

but if you want be more good then please could you explain everything please?

or maybe if someone explain everything the process of doing it i will be very proud

thank you

I'll have a try at this then.
I am not a builder...

If you are removing everything from the top, including the chimney stack then your builder will start from the top.

If you only remove the downstairs chimney and leave the one in the upstairs room then you'll need a steel beam to support the chimney above. This will normally span from wall to wall.

I have heard that if your neighbour has already removed their chimneys then the use of gallow brackets may not be allowed and you'll need to use a steel beam.

The pointing of the wall, when the chimney is removed needs to be adequate, if not then the gasses from the combustion will enter through the holes from the neighbours chimney to yours. This is a dangerous situation.

This is not a DIY job and you'll need to get a surveyor in.

thank you js
also how long will it take for this all

That all depends on how much of the chimney you plan on removing, top, bottom, or all of it, whether the chimney is on the party wall, if on a party wall, whether your neighbour has removed any of theirs, and the extent of their removal....

You start, by answering the above questions, and decide what you want to end up with, then engage a qualified, experienced builder, to explain the process and how long it will take..

Get it wrong, and your house falls down..
