DOGE: the giant Con

I saw a piece recently regarding the folly that "drill, baby, drill!" would lower 'murcan prices at the pumps.

Basically,' murca would have to sell it's own production and continue to buy in the stuff it uses, because they don't have the infrastructure to refine their own crude into "gasoline".
Refiners are thought unlikely to invest tens of billions into new refinery infrastructure, which would take years to come online anyway.

OPEC throttle supply, to control the price of oil worldwide. More crude? OPEC just slow their production, to inflate the price.

And, because 'murca isn't in OPEC, the stuff they need (and therefore, buy in), becomes more expensive anyway.

Sounds plausible?

US was only taken over by China in 2023 as having the worlds largest refining capacity. Refining capacity is about 18.5 million barrels per day, usage is about 20 million barrels per day so not a big haul to bring refining capacity up by that small amount.

What Elon is doing is common in style to what happens in takeovers or when there's a replacement at the top. It takes so long to go through with a scalpel that it's more efficient in the end to use an axe. Tell the ones who want to go, to leave, because they were probably dead wood anyway, and then carve up the rest .
Yes, Musk is cutting Government agencies as if it was Twitter while Trump treats his discussions with other leaders like dodgy real estate deals. They are finding out fast that it isn't the best way to treat others.

Some Trump appointees are pushing back and telling employees not to respond to Musk. What's he going to do? Sack all FBI and Homeland Security workers?

If iPhones get too expensive in Europe (Because of a tariff) the people will not renew
It isn't just the expense, anti American sentiment is growing fast which could put a big dent in his plans.

That corresponds with all the articles I have read and a report I saw on TV.

Basically, USA can't refine any more of their own crude at the moment because they don't have any more refining capacity for the sweet light crude they produce. They have to bring in about 6 million barrels each day, I think, of heavy sour crude from abroad.

Also, the oil price is already quite low, and tight oil is expensive to get out of the ground, so there is little incentive to increase production.

According to the report I saw, US has the wrong type of refining capacity.
Like thinking your bread maker can act as a pizza oven, or a microwave.

Trump won't care if, ultimately, they end up not drilling. It was a great phrase that helped get him back into power.

And remember this, if they don't drill more, Trump as all politicians do, will simply find a way to put the blame squarely on someone else. 'Well I wanted to drill, I really did, but <insert whoever here> blocked me all the way!'

  • Many refineries need heavier crude oil to maximize flexibility of gasoline, diesel and jet fuel production. Today, most crude oil produced in the United States is light, including much of what’s produced in the Permian and Bakken. Light crudes are not good replacements for the heavy crude oil we get from Canada and Mexico.
  • Re-tooling refineries to process solely U.S. crude oil (light crude) would cost billions — a risky investment that would take decades to permit, construct and eventually pay off. We lack the infrastructure (like pipelines) needed to cost effectively supply U.S crude oil and refined products to every region. Even if the economics of re-tooling our facilities worked, it can take close to a decade to permit and build pipelines in the United States.

And yet, you have repeatedly posted that we need a leader like Orangina, because he "gets things done!" (y)

What are you blethering about?

Believe it or not, two or more things can be true at the same time.

I say this:

I'm going to paint that wall blue, that wall green, that wall purple, that wall yellow, that wall brown and that wall red.

If I can't do the yellow wall because someone objected, I've still delivered the blue, green, purple, brown and red walls ;)

When it comes to Orangina, I'd be staggered if anything was true, let alone "two or more things" (y)
A position well-supported by the record.

Depends if the
blue, green, purple, brown and red walls
come to pass ;)

Because of tariffs paint making has stopped and any supplies on the shelves have gone for a Kremlin makeover.

He has no intention of painting any walls, or doing anything else he said he would. Suckers...

It is going to be an interesting experiment, however it turns out. My hunch is that there will be a lot less dead wood in the federal bureaucracy than is popularly imagined.
