Reliable outdoor wall light

Currently have an outdoor light which is PIR only but very unreliable and temperamental. I've had a few which have all been the same.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a reliable/ heavy duty commercial spec if needs be (for domestic use) photocell and PIR outdoor light which is dimmable?

Steinell have a good reputation but are pricey

I find most have the PIR on the bottom. But if placed where they have some protection from the weather, still work OK, without a PIR often all electrics at the top, so it would need to be full to the brim of water for it to matter, the same when on a post the water may get in, but will also get out before it causes damage. The second pictured lamp cost me £4 with integral lamp, not what I would normally go for, but has proved good, as light directed where wanted, the last one I modified putting silver foil in the top to redirect the light down.

I found PIR to be useless, not changed the one with it already fitted, but lighting switching off at just the wrong time, with arm full of shopping trying to get key in the door is not funny, so mine are all smart controlled, so from the car can turn them on, and in house turn them off.

And electronics either in the bulb or in the switch, not out in the weather.

Steinel are expensive but extremely well made. I fitted a Steinel IS 180 PIR to a friend's house about 25 yeas ago. It is still working.

Having a lamp and separate PIR provides for the PIR to be located where it provides best coverage while the lamp is located to give best illumination

Modern LED lamps use trivial electricity and cost next to nothing to run

For reliability and economy, I now have a simple always-on external lamp.

The extra costs of photocell or PIR would never be recovered in electricity costs in the life of the lamp.

Yes very true, I did the same many years ago with the paths between us and next door, used a 6 watt CFL from Ikea as the boiler would trigger the PIR, Part L approved document states.

So with my lighting in the main, I can set dusk until dawn, or other set times, and it only says you should have the controls, it does not say you must use them, and technically I suppose my control does not comply as it responds to when the Internet says daylight should start and finish not directly from daylight.

But the lights turning off while I am halfway up the steps from where I park the car to the kitchen door I regard as dangerous, so turning on with my phone and off with voice control to me is far safer. And in the main it was the PIR which failed, not the lamp, so a lamp without a PIR is a lot less likely to fail.

And for security, having the assess to home unlit is likely to see any intruder trip or fall, and there are places where one could drop 4 foot if one did not have light, so security is better without lights.

It is possible to have smart bulbs fade out gradually rather than switching off instantly if this is a problem.
