They have been slowly surrounding Russia for many years with new country's joining. Ukraine would be too much for them. It is fully understandable

So you are saying all the neighbouring countries should have left themselves vulnerable to Putin to invade whenever he felt like it

It depends what you mean by brutal. I would be happy to be shot or blown up, as long as death happened quickly. I don't want to get badly injured, though. I would imagine there are a lot of older people who would give their lives for a cause they believe in.
