Claims in the media over the weekend that private landlords is being offered 'guaranteed rent' deals to house aslyum seekers are wide of the mark, The Neg can reveal.

I tried to get the above headline in but I could only get one line in

Is it a good idea ? Was it ever a good ideas, it would save costs on paper but it seems unfair to other people struggling to find a home.

Yeah that’s why I put “was it ever” the conservatives started it with serco and it’s being wheeled out again.

I can see some upsides, costs saving, more independence.

But there’s plenty of people looking for a house.

I wonder why?

Serco's CEO is the brother of a former Tory MP. His partner is a Tory Party donor. And Serco's former top spin doctor was the Tory Minister for Health.

Conservatives and their mates were making some nice easy money over asylum seeker housing

I wonder how many millions the Rwanda scheme ended up in the pockets of these people
 
As a LL I have mixed views on this. I'll have a property ready to rent out later in the year, granted I'm in Scotland so the scheme might not be operational up here. If there was an opportunity for a guaranteed 5 year lease with no void periods, no arrear concerns and maintenance costs met, it could be an attractive proposition from a business perspective. Set it and forget it for 5 years.

The potential downside is if it gets out, I could end up with folk protesting either outside the property or indeed my own home!

So, on balance, I'd probably not bother.

and the fact you can't get affordable insurance. Maybe the government has a tame underwritter
