What would you do? (Kitchen warranty situation)

Couple of years ago we had the kitchen re-done.
We bought the units from a big renown name and went for a slightly higher spec since we wanted a special colour.
Fitted by our own amazing decorator who has since, unfortunately, retired.
20 (or was it 25?) years warranty.

Few days ago, we noticed one of the doors started peeling off. It's not near any heat/cold/condensation/damp - it's just terrible paint work!
The kitchen company said they don't do that range any more (the profile of the doors) but what they can do is send us a complete set of new face for our kitchen AND £900 to pay for a decorator to fit it.

All of that - for one door! :)

Of course, the first idea that comes to mind is: Take the money and the doors, get the old door fixed ourselves (ought to be less than 900) and then throw away the perfectly good new set of doors (plinths, cornices, decor panels) because we don't have anywhere to store them. Keep the change.

However, I am starting to think it's not that simple: If we have any problem in the future with the face of our kitchen - they can say "wait, these are the old doors, we paid you to replace them and they are not under warranty"...

Well, actually replacing the face of our kitchen doesn't work, either: £900 is not enough for someone to come, uninstall everything (lots of the stuff isn't just screwed in, it's structural to the kitchen and the whole thing needs to be ripped apart) and then install the new front and provide warranty on the labor...
Not to mention our kitchen looks mint, like the rest of the house and I am pretty sure that if our decorator said any work from now on will show (I mean we'll see the collateral damage of changing components of the kitchen), than any other decorator will DEFINITELY show and we'd be much worse of visually than one peeling door.

So far, I am thinking to try and get more than £900 and try to see if I can store all that spare kitchen face, maybe sell it...
And then hope that any problem with the kitchen face, from then on, can be fixed using that money.

What would you do, if you were in my situation (and if you were very house proud and liked things looking GREAT and not just "meh, it's a door, it closes...")?

Acknowledge the offer and say thanks, but want to get 2 quotes for the work 1st and then assess the offer or make a counter offer.

Ask your retired installer for a quote and submit that to the company.
Could you encourage your original installer to do the work?
I know many retirees who keep their sanity by doing the occasional hobble.
I also know many retirees who wouldn't lift their finger as they lol on their sunbeds

Nah, he's gone.
Polish guy. Shows up 7:00 on the clock and works his posterior off all day.
I tried watching him once - got tired just looking at him work.
Laser sharp work and helped me save thousands with advice and plumbing work he could have refused to do.
He also managed the gas and electrician people for me and probably saved me money from them as well.

By gone I mean he passed away from stomach cancer. Never got to see much rest in his life.
Part of the reason why I keep things sharp. His work is kind of like art, in my humble eyes and I cherish that - I don't have many things in my life at such a high standard...

(Didn't want to open up this sob story initially so I said he was retired - but here we go!)

By all means negotiate a better deal, but the offer is better than you'd get if you took legal action.

Unless this is a massive kitchen, I can't see why this isn't a day's work for 2 people, tops.

Why is the kitchen company recommending that you use a decorator? And why did you say that your decorator retired when, in reality you mean the guy died.

And what is the "face" of the kitchen?

*note: to myself- WTF am I responding to a potential bot

Because you enjoy trolling and I guess I am the lucky guy du jour.
Thanks for making it feel like Reddit everywhere, I guess :)

There are a lot of trolls on this site and some of them have been here a long time. Its an easy mistake to make.

Well, cynicism aside, opps did raise some pertinent questions, care to answer? I know it seems we like to pry for no reason rather than just provide simple answers but the context helps massively.

People who entered the discussion in good faith did not inject a non-existing idea that the kitchen company recommended a decorator, they understood what "face" means and they understood why I chose not to focus on the person's death initially - or at least they understood why it is not "pertinent" to the question.

Others are just being bored and/or otherwise looking to bicker on the internet.

I got the ideas I needed. Thanks and have a great one, yall!

My apologies. We do get what appear to be bots here. On reflection, I should have checked your profile.

If you care to re-read your opening post, in paragraph 2, you mention that the company was willing to pay £900 for a decorator to fit the new "face". You make multiple references to decorators throughout the post.

Do you have photos of the door in question? You mention the paint peeling. It sounds like the door is laminate (or a wrap) and that the laminate is peeling (rather than paint). If you ask the company for the RAL colour code, you might be able to send the door off to a third party to have it wrapped.

That's very sad for a craftsman to go like that.
I can understand your frustration to find someone with the same work ethic.

Something they should have offered. There is obviously, a lot of margin in their kitchens.

20 / 25 year warranty ?? is probably not worth a bag of beans ?? Imo
