Couple of years ago we had the kitchen re-done.
We bought the units from a big renown name and went for a slightly higher spec since we wanted a special colour.
Fitted by our own amazing decorator who has since, unfortunately, retired.
20 (or was it 25?) years warranty.
Few days ago, we noticed one of the doors started peeling off. It's not near any heat/cold/condensation/damp - it's just terrible paint work!
The kitchen company said they don't do that range any more (the profile of the doors) but what they can do is send us a complete set of new face for our kitchen AND £900 to pay for a decorator to fit it.
All of that - for one door!
Of course, the first idea that comes to mind is: Take the money and the doors, get the old door fixed ourselves (ought to be less than 900) and then throw away the perfectly good new set of doors (plinths, cornices, decor panels) because we don't have anywhere to store them. Keep the change.
However, I am starting to think it's not that simple: If we have any problem in the future with the face of our kitchen - they can say "wait, these are the old doors, we paid you to replace them and they are not under warranty"...
Well, actually replacing the face of our kitchen doesn't work, either: £900 is not enough for someone to come, uninstall everything (lots of the stuff isn't just screwed in, it's structural to the kitchen and the whole thing needs to be ripped apart) and then install the new front and provide warranty on the labor...
Not to mention our kitchen looks mint, like the rest of the house and I am pretty sure that if our decorator said any work from now on will show (I mean we'll see the collateral damage of changing components of the kitchen), than any other decorator will DEFINITELY show and we'd be much worse of visually than one peeling door.
So far, I am thinking to try and get more than £900 and try to see if I can store all that spare kitchen face, maybe sell it...
And then hope that any problem with the kitchen face, from then on, can be fixed using that money.
What would you do, if you were in my situation (and if you were very house proud and liked things looking GREAT and not just "meh, it's a door, it closes...")?
