It wouldn't be the politicians that would get the blames for any deaths, it would be whoever was in charge of those boats, turning the immigrants away to their deaths
I'm surprised mbk hasn't popped up to remind us of the law of the sea.
There are several issues taken into account when the immigrants launch their boats. One of those natural effects is the tide.
The immigrants will usually only have enough fuel to reach the midpoint. Then they need rescuing.
If they are turned round they will be simply drifting in open water.
If the French try to rescue them, the migrants may well threaten to sink the boat, or set it on fire, and any non-swimmers will probably drown.
The lights of the UK are easily seen from the French coast. It is very easy to point the boat towards the lights, no navigation skill needed.
