You wouldn't get on a bus and travel 100 miles to another town and tell the people there that you were waiting for the fire to go out.
There is nothing wrong with economic migration, it has always go on but it has to be regulated for the benefit of the migrant and the host population.
You only have to look at the situation in Palestine to see problems that large scale illegal/uncontrolled migration has caused.

I'm not sure that Merz understands the problems:

He said that according to EU agreements asylum-seekers must apply for protection in the first EU country they enter.

While the general idea is that asylum seekers should apply for protection in the first EU country they enter, it's not a strict, legal requirement.

Also Germany can't refuse to accept applications, but they can refuse to grant asylum. There's a subtle difference.

Germany announced recently that it would reject undocumented migrants, including asylum-seekers, at the country's borders

the refugees from Ukraine did not all stay in Poland, they dispersed across Europe.

You are arguing that those who didn’t stay in Poland must be economic migrants.
