The consensus seems to be that Trump has blinked and caved. I'm still not sure. I go back and forth between thinking Trump has a bigger strategy and that he's a lunatic.

I sometimes think that. But then I wonder why didn't Trump work with USA's historic allies to achieve this. Also, blanket tariffs don't seem a particularly useful way of isolating China. The brightest minds in the world are struggling to work out what he is up to, so I am more than happy to admit that I can't see the whole strategy.

I've heard the same analysis from several different sources regarding working with his allies, ad nauseam.
Not one has arrived at the very simple, and most likely conclusion being that it wouldn't work because he doesn't have the time to do it.
Couple that with with the fact that every western leader has bad mouthed Trump at some point or other during his campaign trail + 95% of MSM coverage of him is negative.
If I was in his position I wouldn't waste years pleading for everyone to get on board either.
