Circuit board query

A capacitor will cost less than £1 so I'd be lookinbg for someone local that can solder and repair the board.

If you were near me I'd do it, there must be someone near you.
Finding them though is going to be slightly difficult, perhaps ask on local facebook groups.

Indeed - you're obviously echoing what I wrote ...
Fortunately, however, the timer modules are usually repairable. It's nearly always the electrolytic capacitor that dies (and usually without taking anything else out), and that can be replaced for 'pence' :)
... and ...

again like you, I'm too far away, otherwise I'd be happy to do it for him/her.

You always have to get the last word don't you john!!

You just cannot b ear that someone else will say the same thing to bolster previous comments.
Your pathetic dude.

I think you're being unnecessarily sensitive. All I was doing was confirming that we were in agreement - which essentially amounts to "saying the same thing to bolster previous comments" :) I suppose some people might accuse you of wanting to 'have the last word', given that you chose to post something extra after what you regarded as my 'having the last word' :-).
Your pathetic dude.
Now that's just plain rude - and, I would suggest, not justified.

Sorry John, but I side with mattylad on this - it is what you always do, I have noticed it too.

I think many of us sometimes do it.

I think I am personally only likely to do it when, as in this case, someone posts something which is essentially identical to something already posted (by myself or others) 'as if it had not been posted before', without the courtesy of acknowledging that it was a duplicate of what someone else had already posted.

When I see that B has posted essentially the same thing as A shortly afterwards, I think to myself, “oh look, B must be ignoring posts by A because they find them so annoying”.

If he/she posted 'essentially the same' then that would presumably make B's posts just as annoying as A's ;)

Although I have been accused of 'having to have the last word', when I do comment on what is essentially a repetition of a recent (sometimes, as in this case, immediately prior) post (without any reference to, or acknowledgement of, the earlier post, that 'earlier post' was not uncommonly posted by someone other than myself. So, those who think that I "do it all time" don't seem to realise that it is, if anything, someone else's 'last word' that I am 'defending'.

It takes so little time and effort to (as I usually do if I essentially 'repeat' what others have written) to preface one's 'duplicate post' with something like "As has been said ....." that I have to wonder why some people seemingly don't feel inclined to make that polite gesture.

Personally, and often as not, I only bother reading part of a thread, before offering my own opinion.

Yes, I think that's quite often how these 'almost duplicate' posts arise.

Whilst I'm sure I've been guilty at times (much more in the past), I do these days try not to do what you say (post to a thread without having read it all), not the least because when, in the early days I must have done that quite often, it frequently resulted in my being on the receiving end of what you suggest "I do all the time" :-)

I must confess that, in a sort-of similar fashion, I quite often 'comment' when someone suddenly posts to a thread which is very very old. Do you think I'm also wrong to point that out to them if they do it?

Yes, you should just let it go..

I'm not so sure about that - I think that it's useful opportunity to 'remind' everyone that they need to be careful to look at the date of posts they reply to ;) I don't know about you, but I've certainly 'done it' in my time!

It's not just 'newbies', but quite often 'regulars', who sometimes 'accidentally' reply to a post many years old - and that wretched listed "Similar Threads" at the bottom of each page has got a lot to answer for in this respect [as I write this, there are five in the list I'm being shown. One thread is from about 4 years ago, two about 6 years ago and two from over 12 years ago. I also wonder in what sense a thread entitled "Sugar soap before painting walls?" is 'Similar' to this one :-) ]

It seems I have the exact same selection...

And yes Ihave managed to reply to old threads but I've always maintained I haven't picked them from the lower list.

Ah now I have that too, but quite often I start writing a reply and something else happens, such as a meal is ready etc, when I come back to it later I'll finish the comment and post it... only to find someone has already made a similar comment in the meantime.

As I've often said, I really don't understand why the forum mods/owner don't do something about it (perhaps they can't?). It's all very well, and potentially helpful/useful, to have a list oif 'Similar Threads' at the bottom of the page, but only if they are 'relatively recent' - yet it's nearly always the case (as it is now) that most/all of them are 'ancient'!

I've certainly done it, but I'm not sure how I have managed if not from that list.
