Ssssssshhhhhh, don't mention Reform.

You added that last bit Notch.
“Causes” doing a lot of heavy lifting.
I thought you did sailing.

It seems you don’t know an overloaded badly built SIB is not terribly seaworthy.

So a pushback or turnaround would be very likely to CAUSE distress.

You haven’t explained how a British vessel can turn around a migrant boat whilst the British vessel stays in British water and the migrant boat stays in French water.

Your vivid imagination is doing very heavy lifting

read paragraph 2, they don't need to.

Being "overloaded badly built SIB is not terribly seaworthy" is not the criteria for being in distress.

It is (again) "when there is grave and imminent danger to a vessel or person, and immediate assistance is required".

You'd know this if you had any knowledge.

This was raised on QT last night, which came from Fleetwood. Zia Yusaf was on the panel. He mentioned this thing about turning the boats back, as did a guy in the audience. A conversation then ensued about why this is essentially an unworkable solution, unless we are prepared to accept the fact some of those on board the boats will perish.

However what doesn't help matters is the false information that's communicated, whether intentional or otherwise. Darren Jones was also on the panel and asserted the majority of those on the boats are woman and young children. Much of the audience obviously weren't buying it however he pushed back, reiterating his assertion. I think it was Zia who mentioned the high majority are men, which seems to be the case:

The majority of those arriving in small boats are men. In the year to 31 March 2024, 75% (22,357) were male and aged 18 or over (excluding those of unknown age or sex). Another 16% (4,630) of arrivals in the same period were children (under 18). These proportions have been stable over time, and similar to those observed in asylum applicants more broadly (72% and 19%, respectively, in the year to March 2024). One reason for the higher share of men among asylum seekers, in general, is the danger associated with irregular migration journeys. In many cases, female and minor family members join later through family reunification routes.

Ok, ultimately there's a discussion to be had (mainly from a moral standpoint) re does it matter how many are male or female, however it's not great if a senior politician is giving out what's essentially misinformation. And yes, I know they (politicians) all do it regardless of the subject.

Oh dear: “if they refuse to turn around, then using techniques border force practiced, two jet skis flank the bow and gently turn the boat around”

You’ve literally said the British would use enter French waters to do it.

If the illegals say, no. They are formally notified that they are not permitted to enter UK territorial waters and requested to turn around. They are offered additional fuel if necessary and again asked if they are in distress. If appropriate the intercept vessel keeps them in sight, for several miles and continues to track them on radar.

If they are ignored, or refuse to turn around, then using the techniques border force practiced, two jet skis. flank the bow and gently turn the boat around. Since the illegal boat is a flat bottomed boat, typically 10m or more in length with a 10-15hp outboard it will take almost no force to turn the bow and not cause any risk

Did all the panel agree?

Reforms plan to sort out the small boats is to “tow them back to France”

We all know that’s nonsense.

Paragraph 2 of Article 25. Not my explanation of how it can be done.

The IDF's intercept of Greta's selfie yacht is a perfect example.

I don't think they all said something on that specific point. It was quite a testy programme. However I doubt Fiona would agree with pushing boats back, the Labour guy wouldn't, the Lib Dem who was on wouldn't, so that just leaves Zia and the Tory. Former is in favour, latter might be?
