Manchester airport assault

I think the defence have done a very good job, but then I felt PC Marsden did very well in the process.

I'd expect a verdict tomorrow.

We can then discuss more freely

The policeman kicking the man on the floor was maybe a bit excessive but I think they deserved the kick after the flurry of punches that the police man endured.

I haven't followed the trial. I can barely remember the video, it seems so long ago. But the defence seem to be that the police officers broke procedure by silently grabbing the defendant from behind and he thought he was being assaulted.

"PC Marsden's decision-making has put his colleagues in danger. It has caused all this to happen. It could have been avoided.

"One might think that the easiest thing to have done would have been to say 'excuse me sir, would you mind stepping outside so I can have a word with you'.

"What would be wrong with that? This was not the crime of the century.

"They all three of them grab hold of parts of his body without announcing themselves, that's crazy.

It will be interesting to see how it turns out.

It was certainly a human reaction but a kick in the head can kill. But he is not on trial

yep. But hard to ignore the image of the wpc, with her face/nose smashed and blood pouring out.

but it happened after the assault.

I followed it a little bit and can remember it clearly enough but you seem to know more about it than you say you do- I have never heard about that bit

I was just quoting from the article I posted which I only found half an hour ago. That is the whole extent of my knowledge about the trial. I knew it was going on, but I haven't followed it.

I see

You seem suspicious.

I followed it a lot a year ago when the attacks happened.

And I will discussing it when the verdict comes out.

I just haven't followed the trial itself.

I hope that clears things up a bit.

I have mentioned to you before that I have switched off from the news recently.

Here is a bit more from the article:

"They all three of them grab hold of parts of his body without announcing themselves, that's crazy.

"This deliberate intentional plan led to unlawful force being applied. This is a group of officers led by PC Marsden that flouts every procedure, every rule, every law.

"Fahir was terrified for his life. That's how this started."

I started this thread as a place holder for the verdict and we should rightly wait until that comes, shortly. The coverage on the Manchester evening news has been first class.

If we remember when this first came to light, it was a police brutality video which carefully removed the prior assault. Only once the full video came out did we see more of the story.

That is my recollection as well. Or it might have been that the only footage released initially was the police brutality. I don't think that footage was actually edited. I think we had to wait for different cameras to see the full thing.

I can see now where I might have caused confusion. I inferred that he had been grabbed "silently" from behind. That was my own interpretation of that BBC article. I might be wrong. If so, it wasn't on purpose.

Actually it was the allegation from the defence team.

"They all three of them grab hold of parts of his body without announcing themselves, that's crazy.

They are trying to argue self defence, it's the only angle they have. They have done a good job, but the question remains is was the self defence proportionate even if it was genuine, that's assuming the jury even entertain the idea.
