Personalised Plate expired

Hi people.
What happens to a vehicle when a personalised number plate expires ?
When i look up the number the car no longer exists on the DVLA website.This vehicle has not moved for about 7 years.

Do you mean the keeper did not tax or SORN it?

AFAIAA The plate will only expire if the vehicle is scrapped, not on a sorn or dvla have been asked to remove it.

2 years ago when i checked it on the DVLA website it said,not sorn,not taxed and not insured.
Now it does not exist and i wondered if personalised plates expired after a certain time if not retained ? and that is why it does not exist ?
The owner has gone into care.

Probably been reclaimed by the DVLA if not sorned for over a certain amount of time. Check if it’s for sale or coming up in an auction on here: https://dvlaregistrations.dvla.gov.uk/

Write to the dvla telling them that you have taken possession of the car and ask for a V5. They will write to the last keeper telling them that and if the last keeper doesn’t respond in a certain time, it will transfer to you. Put the plate on retention and get rid of the car. I think that’s how it works.

Yes, just ring a scrappy to take it away. My want to let the owner know first

I believe car needs an MOT before a plate can be removed - I've read of people paying thousands to get a pile of rust through an MOT just to get a valuable plate off.

There are legalities around scrapping cars these days - otherwise I'd of had at least 3 of my inconsiderate neighbours cars scrapped in the last week.

That’s how i recall it working plus if the vehicle is scraped with that the number, the number can never be reissued

I would suggest you call the DVLA

You'll still need to buy the car its on to acquire - I think

Don't think that's still the case.
My neighbour transferred a private plate from a scrap of a Jeep he'd kept rusting in his drive to a new car.
Unless he got a Mickey mouse mot for the Jeep, there's no way it would even make it to the MOT garage.
I'll ask him.
