Morning all

We've just moved into a new (to us) house. The non-combi boiler is about 2 years old and there's a Hive thermostat. There is a water tank in the airing cupboard.

What's bothering me is the electricity consumption compared to our old house. It's gone up significantly and I can't work out what's using it. We can be sat there with very little on and the live reading can go up to between 4kWh and 6kWh.

The only thing I can't really eliminate is the hot water. It has 2 "bits" on it. On the top of the tank is the round bit in the photo. That has a cable with a mains plug which isn't plugged into anything. Then the HS3 is hardwired into a big junction box type thing. That goes to a switch that turns everything off in the airing cupboard including the boiler.

My question is, based on this, is it possible to tell whether the immersion is running on mains as well?

Thanks in advance
Andy

Are you sure the immersion has a plug on it ? (top pic)
The second pic is the thermostat that controls the hot water temperature.

If the immersion element - PIC1 - isn't plugged into anything then no, it won't be running on the mains. For the immersion to be turned on that cable would need to be plugged in.

If you are suggesting that the reading is running between 4-6Kw then that's quite a significant draw if you don't think that anything with a high consumption is turned on.

Suggest you need to go looking to see what else may be switched on. One place to start would be the consumer unit, start isolating certain circuits and watch the draw, if one area reduces that draw when off then time to go looking to see what could be connected to it.

Yup. 100%. But from the other reply, it looks like the tank isn't the culprit anyway. Have to do some more digging!

It's bad practise to have an immersion fitted with a plug as the plug or pins will likely overheat.
