He thinks it's better to be employed than self employed
That's an opinion. However, he said this....
Years ago being self employed and being employed was night and day, self employed took the risks but got big rewards. Nowadays becoming self employed is not worth the risk. You don't need to understand.
If HWM would just explain, perhaps?

Good god man. Wages compared to self employment in the electrical industry was always night and day. Wages were never high, jobs and conditions were poor in comparison . Self employed sparks enjoyed choosing their own work and charged a premium at the same time.
Now skilled and qualified people are hard to recruit for employers and so wages have shot through the roof along with conditions vastly improving to entice people in. Self employment was a risk to a family man with a mortgage and work was not in abundance unlike getting an employed job which was easy. The pickings were rich for good self employed sparks if you could get the work.

How many years ago are we talking here?

Explain how do todays' self employed differ from those of yesteryear in that respect. It sounds like nebulous fluff to me.

Eh? Why not? How is it more risky being self employed today than it was previously?

You could start by making (coherent) sense. At least then I could begin.
The tax rules have change for a start.

Minute we lifted carpet and seen states of boards you just knew a spark had been at work majority of them absolutely no idea how to lift a board without damaging them
Most underfloor cable damage I have seen caused by plumbers
