“First safe country”

There are 3 kinds of Migrants
1 - Those with skills, money etc who are eligible for visas. They will make a contribution to the country and if the rules are set up well this will be a greater contribution than they take. Welcome.
2 - Those who are genuinely fleeing persecution and for whatever reason - the UK is the nearest/easiest safe country to give them protection. Welcome until things improve at home.
3 - Those who just want a better life, or to be funded by a generous country, who see the UK as soft touch or just a better place to live. See option 1, that is you way in.

It's interesting, there's a talking head on tv just now saying 80% of applications to remain are approved. His assertion is, the high majority of migrants are therefore genuine/okay and should be allowed to work etc until their applications have been processed.

The cynic in me tends to wonder how robust the application process is if 80% are approved. I've not fact checked that %.

The government is focusing on speeding up the process with specific KPIs that may discourage risking an appeal. The applicants are normally well briefed on how to make a successful claim and the tax payer picks up the bill. The Appeals are public info, I've posted links before. A lot of the appeals are very weak and you'd be surprised at the benefit of the doubt that is given.

Given the appeals claims - Iran seems to be the rainbow capital of the world.
