Help with painting architrave/trim against wallpaper

Hi All - I’m looking to paint some architrave trim that’s set on top of wallpaper - how the heck do I do this without making an enormous mess of the wallpaper?

I’m worried about using masking tape in case it rips the wallpaper and I’m not a good enough painter to perfectly cut in - it’s also in a really awkward position over a double height staircase. I have to fully lean over the stairwell to get to it, which doesn’t help matters.

Any tips or products to use would be much appreciated!

I'd use one of those long blades and hold against to protect wood as you paint.
