Based purely on defence spending and NATO contributions, surely it's the other way round and Europe abandoned the USA, until they needed them.
They need them now so they're finally starting to pony up their fair share of spending, but a bloc of 500 million people begging a country of 300 million people for help overcoming a country consisting of 150 million people, really?.

USA was always happy to spend money on Europe, as their 1st line of defence, potentially keeping any war out of their country. Yes, Europe has started digging into their pockets more, but it's not because USA has increased its support, it's because it has the potential to pull away. Another short sighted mobve by Trump, that has gone against ALL the previous Presidencies, regardless of party.

If you feel safer now, then you really are heavily blinkered.
