Mandatory ID cards (Brit Card) to be announced tomorrow

why do you always hide behind insults? does it make you feel smart? it doesn't make you look very smart
Always is a bit much, but there has been a lot of nonsense posted by some people who clearly don't understand anything about this topic. That may or may not include you, the panic mongers tend to blur together.

People asking where a digital ID will be, as if it is a physical object, or what 2FA is show they don't understand enough of the basics to meaningfully contribute.

Are you sure about that?

8GB ram for just that and considering its a mobile phone.

Source please.
He's wrong. Although technically so am I, the current version just requires Android 10.

Using the GOV.UK ID Check app - GOV.UK https://share.google/nSjgyWjGs3NmtPs9k

It's amazing, the website even tells you how to authenticate without the app. Almost as if this stuff has been thought through.

Fear not, the doomsday naysayers will find a way not to accept the simplicity of it, even if it means removing their own nose.
No hoots given from me about it, whatsoever.

So take android 10 released September 2019 so likely that if you brought a phone in 2019 it would be android 9 - not completable, come 2020 phones would be shipped with android 10. So if you have a phone older than 2020 running android 9 the facescan app needed for the id card sign up will not be compatible according to the stats that is 4.18% of all users of android.
That is now but by the time the thing is rolled out you are probably looking at android 12 min requirement.

No, nearly all phones sold in 2019 would be upgraded as standard. Two years of updates is the minimum for cheaper brands so 2017 era phones.

The App is already rolled out, I have already installed it and used it.

All very straight forward --- NOT

HEADING=2]If you’re using a passport[/HEADING]
Make sure the passport you’re using has a biometric chip. To check if your passport has a biometric chip, look for the rectangular biometric chip symbol on the front cover.

You’ll be asked to:
  1. Take a photo of your passport.
  2. Scan the biometric chip in your passport using your phone.
  3. Scan your face using your phone.
If you’re using a BRP
If your photo ID is a BRP, you’ll be asked to:
  1. Take a photo of your BRP.
  2. Scan the biometric chip in your BRP using your phone.
  3. Scan your face using your phone.
Scanning the biometric chip in your passport or BRP
The scan can fail because:
  • your phone is not touching your photo ID
  • your phone has a case or accessory on it - try removing these and scanning your photo ID again
  • internet connection has been lost briefly
    • the phone was moved while the scan was happening
    • another document, other than your passport or residence permit, is being scanned

  • You could try again and you should see a help animation. Follow the on-screen instructions and, when you’re ready, select ‘Start scan’ or place your phone on top of your passport to start the scan automatically.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So the other way without the face scan app is this ------ so its another app you need to download. What about if you dont have a passport - or a driving licence or one with a picture - paper one.

With the GOV.UK One Login app
You’ll need one of the following types of photo ID:
UK photocard driving licence
UK passport
You can use an expired BRP, BRC or FWP up to 18 months after its expiry date.

Not so -- cheaper phones only come with the 1 installed current version so if you are buying a cheap phone today it will be with android 15 -- out of date already as the current version is 16 - only released in June.

No dramas, correct.
Wrong. I went through the process of buying a new phone this year and the cheaper ones ship with android 15 and that is it -- NO android updates included in the price.
Piece of cake. You would need to be particularly stupid to have trouble with it....
Showing your arrogance once again

If only we had some way to provide photo ID for everyone, perhaps one where you didn't have to buy a passport or get a driving license that you might not need just to prove your identity!

BTW, If you don't have a photo on your driving licence then you must be between the age of 45 and 70 and not moved since 1998. Because if you're over 70 or you changed address then it isn't valid anymore.

I wonder how many people that is

one single form of digital photo ID for all.. sounds great...

One system to hack, one ID to compromise.

Again, Google is a better way of finding this stuff out. They'll all have to convert to a modern system by 2033.
So there are 4.7 million holding a paper licence that will not be able to use the system to get an ID then add on to that the 4.18 % of people whos phones are not "new" enough I can see the 2033 figure being pushed back - just like smart meters.

The DVLA told us that, as of March 2023, there were 4.7 million valid paper licences in the UK. If you have one of those, these generally don't expire until you're 70, so you don't need to do anything until then unless your address or personal details change. All licences must be in the photocard format by 2033.
