That’s a strong point, such a requirement could end up excluding a huge chunk of people, including many British-born citizens. Seems like it would be really controversial and not just about immigrants.

I know it's not the same thing, however on a UK game show the other day one of the contestants said she had lived in Spain for eight years. 'Oh, you'll know some Spanish then?' the host asked. How are they sponging? They will likely have spent their working lives, contributing to the UK, helping pay for the NHS. I guess you will be 'sponging' too, once you get a few years under your belt, or will you be committing hari-cari?
