Hi everyone hope your having a good week just a quick question, had log burner fitted 3 weeks ago on Tuesday coming, it has dried out a lot however doesnt seem to be chaning now,it's where the thicker bonding was put in, the wall has never been a issue and doesnt feel wet to touch at all but reluctant to paint incase it is wet. I will attatch some pictures, had burner on a few times now and just doesnt seem to change. I also went over top of some imperfections with filler thats the white colour.

Any ideas or do you think is just not fully dry ? Or does it sometimes go different colour.

Thanks dean

Hygroscopic salts are fairly common on chimney breasts, which’d need a different system to the bonding and skim. Maybe dehumidifier for a few more weeks and if no change likely needs a rethink for that bit.

So is it quite normal for it to take 4 weeks or so to be fully dry ?

Thanks dean

I bought a bag of bonding to go over some cable channels I chased recently in the lounge and it took weeks for it to go off. Never had that problem before.

In the good old days, I'd bond in my chases and boxes, have a bit of lunch, then it'd be ready for skimming when I came back.

How old was that Thistle Bonding?

but reluctant to paint incase it is wet
The presence of salts in 3 of the photos give me the impression that the paint will go bobbly and fall off anyway. You might need to approach this another way, such as over boarding it

No idea how old the bonding was but wouldn't imagine it was old. The white in pictures is where i skimmed it all with fine filler as the skim coat wasn't perfect. I will leave the dehumidifier on every night for next 4 days or so and see how it looks. Last time didn't seem to take anywhere near this long.

No!

We strive to skim bonding coat as quickly as possible, even before its fully hydrated, as once it's gone chalky light pink, it becomes very high suction.

The bonding you have there looks like old gear that has refused to hydrate. I'd hack it off and re-do with some fresh gear.

Going to ring lads who did it, absolute nightmare thanks mate

If I paintthis would it just peel ?

It might, but if you're amenable to hacking it off and replacing it, what have you got to lose by trying? Maybe use a breathable one, rather than eg something impervious like bathroom ceiling paint

We have the room done in brilliant white emulsion so that would he the paint. If I knew if wouldn't peel i would be fine with that, will the different colour effect anything at all or will it still be fine just difference in colour. Or if given more time will it change colour and look light pink ? The bit at top where wire run was has dried out just looks like where bonding coat was thicker is the darker colour.

Also just noticed it is a white substance ontop of it that wipes away easily

Also just checked with moisture meter and 3.5% and in red on meter so just need to know if will eventually dry out really

Thanks again dean
