Another ditched Labour manifesto pledge.

Agreed that 'from day one' is not a good idea, but given that those at the bottom tend to get abused the most work wise then maybe a staggered approach as to the length of time required to attain protections?

Why should it ever be OK to treat someone UNFAIRLY?

After all if a manager can't work out if a person can stack shelves within a few months then they're not doing a great job themselves!

If someone can't stack shelves, and stacking shelves is (part of) their job then sacking them isn't unfair.

Who said that?

What is the issue is how employee rights are addressed, but in order to be fair employers interests must also be considered...

I recall a mock industrial dispute lesson at school where the starting premise was that employers want as much work done as possible for the lowest wages...

And the employees/unions want to do as little work as possible for a high wage...

The simplistic answer was to compromise.

Because basically without fair and adequate checks and balances, at any given time one side or the other will take the p*ss if they can get away with it!

Everybody cheering the fact that employees can be dismissed UNFAIRLY in the first 6 months. Some of them want to be able to treat employees UNFAIRLY for even longer

So the only fair way to consider employers' interests is to allow them to dismiss their employees UNFAIRLY?

You talk about FAIR checks and balances, but want employees to be able to be dismissed UNFAIRLY.
